Chamber Breakfast

The Kentucky Lake Chamber was privileged to have Mike McGregor, District 1 Chief Engineer for the Kentucky Department of Transportation to be the guest speaker at their June Biscuits & Business Breakfast.  Mr. McGregor updated guests on the numerous road projects under construction in Marshall County.  The I-24/Purchase Parkway interchange in Calvert City is scheduled for completion around June of 2018 and once that is completed then the entire stretch of Parkway from I-24 to Graves County will  be designated as I-69.  Work on the interchange at Benton should ramp up again shortly since the settling period for the new embankments has been fulfilled.  They anticipate that traffic will be running in the new directions on those ramps by the end of the year, with finishing work taking place until the spring of next year.  He shared that the paving, guardrail work and bridge work between Calvert City and Mayfield is now finished which provides 30 miles of parkway converted to interstate standards so that will be ready for conversion when Calvert interchange is complete.  Several factors have delayed the opening of all four lanes on the Eggners Ferry bridge over Kentucky Lake which at one point was July 1st, but now looks like will be 3rd week of July, plus activity to remove and demolish the old bridge is ramping up now that clearance has been received from the Department of Fish and Wildlife regarding Osprey activity.   Underwater foundation work for the bridge over Lake Barkley should be completed within a few months, then construction should be above water from that point and move rather quickly.  The drainage structure on Griggstown Road is complete and that road is now open to through traffic again. McGregor shared that the enhancements and beautification projects for Highway 62 in Calvert City from I-24 to state park should be safe from any delays because those are federally funded. On the down side, Mr. McGregor gave a lengthy explanation as to why the widening of 5th Street in Benton may be delayed due to lack of funds and department overspending.  He shared that the project will happen, just may happen a little farther in the future than was originally thought.  However, he said that he and his staff were committed to assisting the property owners on 5th Street, who have already been inconvenienced a great deal by all the utility work, to regain as much normalcy as possible while they wait for next phase to be approved.
